Connect to Lifelong Learning with the HP Library

Library Card Sign-Up Month image

A library card opens a world of infinite possibilities through resources and services that help people pursue their passions and give students the tools to succeed in school and beyond. September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, a time when the Highland Park Harvey R. "Bum" Bright Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to remind students and families that a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.

Libraries offer free and fun educational resources and activities that connect families and communities. From STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) programs, family story times, to virtual homework help, libraries transform lives through education. Librarians and library staff are leaders in their communities, helping people of any age to find what they need to improve their quality of life.

Highland Park Library cards are free for residents of the Town of Highland Park. Please visit the Library, located in the Highland Park Town Hall at 4700 Drexel Drive, during business hours to fill out a library card application. The Library is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. and Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

The Highland Park Library serves as the community's connection to lifelong learning and powers imagination through creativity and discovery by providing innovative services and programs for cardholders, including:

Downloadable Books and Audiobooks
  • Download and read or listen to bestsellers, for all ages and interests, on mobile devices and computers.
Digital Magazines and Newspapers
  • Access over 7,000 magazines and newspapers without paying any subscription fees. Stay current on local, national, and international news by accessing Press Reader or the RBDigital app.
Online Live Tutoring
  • Tutoring service is available online from 2:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m. for students in kindergarten to introductory college courses. BrainFuse’s HelpNow online service pairs the student with a real person through online chat and services. HelpNow and Press Reader have been generously provided by the Highland Park Quality of Life Foundation.
Lifelong Learning Adult Programs
  • Cultural and educational programs range from expert lectures, to financial literacy, to health and well-being. Classes or one-on-one instruction with Library staff on using the Library’s various online resources and apps as well as introductions to social media.
  • Online courses for learning anything, anytime, anywhere. Explore interactive tutorials on business, software, technology, and creative skills.
STEAM Kits & TECH Kits
  • With fun robots, coding theory games, and themed activity packs, families can learn together about the many interesting facets of technology and science at home. The STEAM Kits and the TECH Kits were made possible by a grant to the Friends of the Highland Park Library from La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas.
Puppet Kits
  • Early literacy skills help set the foundation for a love of learning and stories. Puppet kits are a great way to share reading and engage little readers with characters of the book right in your hand.  The Puppet Kit Collection was made possible by a generous donation from the Beverly Drive Book Club.
