[ARCHIVED] New STEAM kits now available at Higland Park Library

La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas
Thanks to a generous grant from La Fiesta de las Seis Banderas to the Friends of the Highland Park Library, the Highland Park Harvey R. “Bum” Bright Library has curated 11 kits exploring a variety of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) topics. These kits are available for check out in the Library’s children’s room. Come to the Library to discover more about the workings of our world today!

Kits intended for ages 3-7:

Night Sky:  Bring the night sky closer with an easy to use telescope. Learn how the constellations received their names and what it would be like if you visited the other planets in our solar system through this kit’s books, DVDs, and an indoor projector.
Weather Wise: Make your own tornado, monitor the weather outside, imagine what it would be like to fly through a hurricane, and more through this kit’s books, games, and weather lab.

Healthy Bodies: Learn how our bodies work and what it takes to keep them moving through this kit filled with books, games, and manipulatives.

Alpha-You-Bet: Who knew the alphabet could be so much fun? Includes 26 letter “robots”, writing practice cards, spelling game, and more.

Shape Up: Come explore the shapes that surround us. This kit includes tangram puzzles, shape stacking challenges, magnetic building tiles, DVDs and more!

Lions, Tigers, Bears-Oh, My!: Get to know our animal neighbors through this kit’s books, DVDs, games, and talking microscope.

Creepy-Crawlies: Get up close and personal with REAL bugs! Explore the inner workings of more than 50 insect species through the encased specimens, x-ray cards, and beautifully illustrated books in this kit.

Kits intended for ages 8

Reach for the Stars: Take your space exploration further with the telescope, star chart, and step-by-step guide to the night sky included in this kit.

Wired for Fun: Explore basic circuitry and currents with this Snap Circuits kit. Take your knowledge into the real world by creating some easy to make gadgets out of materials you have around the house.

What will you Makey Makey?: Ever had the desire to turn your lunch into a keyboard? Make a video game controller out of Playdough? Well, now you can with a Makey Makey. Kit includes some helpful books to get you started. Does require a computer or laptop, not included.

Dash!: Meet Dash, your first robot friend. Use basic coding to make Dash respond to the sound of your voice, navigate his surroundings, and more! No previous experience with or knowledge of robotics needed. Does require a free app to be downloaded to your own device, not included.
