[ARCHIVED] September is Library Card Sign-Up Month

Transform your school year with a library card.

This September, the Highland Park Library is joining with the American Library Association and libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-Up Month, an initiative to make sure that every student has the most important school supply of all – a library card. The value of today’s libraries goes beyond books. Librarians are leaders in their communities – helping people of any age to find what they need to help improve their quality of life.

Libraries build a foundation for children’s future success starting from the earliest stages of development. Librarians play a key role in helping children develop the basic tools for school readiness by teaching families the components of early literacy. Older students can also find tools for success at their local libraries, where they can access high-speed Internet and digital tools, as well as working with trained professionals on how best to use these resources.

Students can turn to the Library for materials and knowledgeable staff that support academic achievement. The Library offers access to authoritative, educational online resources such as EBSCO Explora for elementary school age children, EBSCO Middle Search Plus for youth in middle school, Literary Reference Center for literary criticism, downloadable e-books and audio books, and much more. These resources are subscription-only and ad-free.

The Library can help prepare children for school with weekly early literacy story times. Lapsit for little ones birth through 24 months is on Wednesday, Toddler Story Time for two year-olds is on Thursday, and Preschool Story Time for three and four year-olds is on Friday. All Story Times take place at 10:00 a.m.

Highland Park Library cards are free for residents of the Town of Highland Park. Please visit the Library during business hours, Tuesday through Saturday 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., to fill out a library card application (the Library will be closed Saturday, September 2 for Labor Day). The Library is located at 4700 Drexel Drive. Also visit the Library online at www.hplibrary.info or call 214-559-9400 for more information.
