The mission of Special Olympics Texas is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in the sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Currently there are over 44,000 athletes in Texas that are served by Special Olympics.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) is Special Olympics’ largest grassroots fund-raiser and public awareness vehicle in the world. Highland Park DPS began their involvement with LETR under the direction of Darrell Fant in 1988. Now celebrating twenty-five years, Highland Park DPS officers continue their commitment and dedication to Special Olympics Texas athletes, parents, coaches, and volunteers.
