Children's Summer Reading Club

Starting June 1, register and participate online, at hptx.beanstack.org, for the 2021 Children’s Summer Reading Club. 

  • Programs are available for ages 0 - 5 and readers in 1st - 6th grades. 
  • Earn points, badges, and certificates by logging minutes read, activities completed, and virtual events attended.
  • You may also pick up a print Summer Reading Log at the Library to keep track of your summer reading activities. 
  • Earn 150 points to receive a prize, and earn a total of 300 points to receive a prize and a certificate of completion.
  • Complete the program and Library staff will choose a book to donate in your name to Children's Health, the leading pediatric hospital in North Texas, dedicated exclusively to the comprehensive care of children from birth to age 18.

The University Park Public Library and the Highland Park Library are joining together to bring families and children a summer of exciting virtual events and workshops.  

Earn 25 points towards your reading goal for each virtual event you attend.

  • June 2, 3:00 p.m. - Blackland Prairie Raptor Center. Blackland Prairie Raptor Center will provide a live, 
    Zoom presentation introducing children to the world of raptors.

    Please email lcollins@hplibrary.info by Tuesday, June 1 to register, and receive the meeting code and password to the Zoom presentation.

  • June 9, 3:00 p.m. - Mr. Will’s “Tales and Tails” Music Show.  Join Mr. Will for entertaining and educational songs about the animals and tales of Texas in this online program.

    On June 9, the Library will send out a link to the show to email subscribers.

  • June 16, 3:00 p.m. - James Wand: Operation Read More. Join James Wand on an exciting and hilarious adventure of magic and mystery in this online program.

  • June 23, 3:00 p.m. - Virtual Crafternoon Ocean Animals. Join Miss Zoe and Miss Laura for a Virtual Crafternoon. Use your imagination to craft pipe cleaner ocean animals in this live, hands-on Zoom workshop.

    Please email lcollins@hplibrary.info by Tuesday, June 22 to register and receive the meeting code and password, and to reserve and pick up a To-Go Craft Kit at the Library before the program. This program is limited to 20 Zoom participants.

  • June 30, 3:00 p.m. - Nasher Sculpture Center: "Flat or Not?" 

    Children ages 5 and up are invited to observe and discuss 2D and 3D works of art in this live, interactive Zoom presentation with Nasher Sculpture Center staff. During the discussion, participants will make different 3D works of art using materials you can find at home.

    Supplies needed at home for the workshop:
    • Something to draw with, such as a pen, pencil, or marker
    • 3 different colors (crayons, markers, pencils or pens)
    • 3 sheets of computer paper
    • A pair of scissors

  • July 14, 3:00 p.m. - Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History: Ice Cold Science 

    Escape the hot Texas summer with some cool science! Learn about heat, cold, and thermodynamics as we make ice cream in a bag in this online presentation from the Ft. Worth Museum of Science and History.

  • July 21, 3:00 p.m. - Virtual Crafternoon: Snake Knitting

    Join Miss Zoe and Miss Laura for a Virtual Crafternoon. Use your imagination to craft cardboard tube knitted snakes in this live, hands-on Zoom workshop.

  • July 28, 1:00 p.m. - The Ravenmaster of the Tower of London

    In a live presentation straight from England, Chris Skaife, Ravenmaster and Yeoman Warder at the Tower of London, will share the folklore, history and superstitions surrounding both the Tower ravens and their home, as well as what it’s like to care for the most important birds in England!
