History of DART

Along with 12 other Dallas County municipalities, Highland Park voters approved the creation of funding of the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) regional transit agency with a one-cent local sales tax on August 13, 1983. Highland Park (appointed by the Town Council) shares with University Park and Richardson, a voting representative to DART's 15-member board of directors. Revenue from the voter-approved one-cent sales tax, federal funds, investment income, short- and long-term financing, and farebox revenue fund the operation and ongoing development of DART's multimodal Transit System Plan.
