Wireless Security
The Library's wireless Internet connection is an unsecured open network. It is not possible to guarantee the safety of your computer or data when using WiFi. Information is not protected while using wireless, and can be intercepted by anyone with the proper equipment and within range of the Library’s network, unless you use encryption. We highly recommend that you use anti-virus software and configure it to check automatically for updates on a frequent basis. We also highly recommend that you configure your PC to automatically check for and download updates for your Microsoft Windows, Outlook and Internet Explorer software; and that you install a personal firewall. Make your password strong by including a mixture of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.

The Library cannot assume responsibility for your laptop or wireless device.

Wi-Fi Technical Support
The Library cannot accept the responsibility of handling technical assistance regarding wireless access as there are too many possible combinations of hardware and software. There is no guarantee that you will be able to connect. Users are responsible for configuring their own devices. If you need assistance, contact the manufacturer of your wireless device or software.

The Library cannot accept the responsibility for any changes you make to your computer's settings, and recommends that you copy or make a note of any settings before you change them.

Using Wi-Fi in the Library
Wireless users must be 18 years of age or older or must have parental consent. Patrons must have a Highland Park Library card and agree to the Library’s Internet Policy. READ CAREFULLY THE LIBRARY’S HOME PAGE DISCLAIMER.

The Highland Park Library uses the WiFi standard (also known as IEEE 802.11a/b/g or compatible).

You will need your own wireless equipment with built-in WiFi or WiFi network interface card. The Library does not have wireless devices available for public use. Most WiFi equipment is compatible. However, the Library makes no guarantees as to compatibility of your equipment with the Library's network.

Printers are not connected to the Library’s wireless network. If you wish to print, you may send your work to an email account, then log in to one of the Library’s public access computers (PAC) and print from your email. Printing charges are posted on each PAC.

Audio users must bring headphones.

Several access points are located in the Library. You should be able to connect almost anywhere in the Library. When your wireless network card senses a signal a message appears on your screen indicating a wireless network is available. If using Windows XP select “View available wireless” or, if using Windows Vista select “Connect to network.” “HPwireless network” will appear. Click on this and you will be shown the Library’s Internet Policy. If you agree to the Policy, click on “I Agree” and you may begin using wireless Internet. All Library rules apply to wireless users.
